Landscaping and garden maintenance in Chapelhall

Scotia Maintenance covers Chapelhall for garden maintenance, lawn care, returfing and landscaping, working across the older streets around Main Street and the newer estates that have grown up around the village. Available seven days a week, 8am to 4pm.

New turf laid the full length of a back garden in Chapelhall after the old waterlogged lawn was dug out

Chapelhall sits just south of Airdrie, close to the M8, and has changed a great deal over the last couple of decades. The older part of the village grew up around the ironworks and pits that once surrounded it, and the housing from that era has longer, more traditional back gardens. Around it, new estates and social housing have added a large number of modern homes with compact rear gardens, usually a lawn, a slab path and timber fencing, laid out in rows.

The ground is the thing to understand in Chapelhall. Much of this part of North Lanarkshire sits on heavy clay, and a lot of the land has been built on, backfilled or regraded at some point, whether for industry or for housing. Topsoil on newer plots is often shallow and spread over compacted subsoil. That combination drains slowly, so water sits in lawns after heavy rain, grass thins out, and moss takes over the wet patches. When a lawn floods regularly, feeding and scarifying rarely fix it. Digging out the failed surface, regrading the ground and returfing usually does.

Gardens here are also relatively exposed, on higher, open ground east of Glasgow, so the growing season starts a little later in spring than it does closer to the Clyde, and fencing and planting take more weather. Maintenance is planned around that rather than on a city calendar.

Chapelhall landscaping questions

Do you cover all of Chapelhall?

Yes, the whole village is covered, including the older streets around Main Street, the newer estates and neighbouring Calderbank and Newhouse. Call 07766 636189 to arrange a visit.

My back lawn in Chapelhall floods every time it rains. Can you fix it?

Often, yes. Where the problem is a compacted, mossy lawn on slow-draining ground, digging out the old surface, regrading it and laying new turf makes a real difference, and it is work we have carried out in Chapelhall. Where the cause is a blocked drain or water running in from higher ground, drainage work may be needed as well. The garden is assessed on site before anything is recommended.

Do you do work for council tenants and housing providers?

Yes. We carry out work instructed by councils and housing providers as well as for private homeowners, and the standard of the work is the same either way.

Can you take on a garden on a new-build estate?

Yes. New-build gardens in and around Chapelhall often have thin topsoil over compacted ground, which causes patchy grass and standing water. The ground is checked first, because that decides whether a lawn can be improved or needs to be relaid.
