Artificial Grass or Real Turf? An Honest Comparison for Scottish Gardens

This is probably the most common question that comes up on a site visit, and it rarely has a clean answer. Both options work well in the right garden and badly in the wrong one, and the deciding factor is usually not preference but what is under your feet and who uses the space.

Where artificial genuinely wins

There are gardens where real grass is never going to succeed no matter what is spent on it. A north-facing plot enclosed by fences and mature trees may get two or three hours of direct light in midsummer and none in winter. Grass in that situation thins out, moss takes over and the cycle repeats every year. The same goes for a narrow strip that takes constant traffic between a back door and a gate, or a garden shared with a large dog.

• Deep shade, where grass will never hold a sward regardless of feeding or overseeding.
• High traffic, where a real lawn turns to mud from October to April.
• Households that want the garden usable in winter rather than out of bounds.
• People who genuinely do not want to think about it, or are away often enough that a lawn would not get cut.

Where real turf is the better call

On an open, reasonably sunny plot with decent drainage, real grass is cheaper to install, better for wildlife, cooler in summer and repairable in patches. It also handles rainfall in a way artificial does not need to think about but a badly built artificial lawn very much does. If your garden is already growing grass reasonably well and the complaint is just the cutting, the honest answer is often regular lawn care rather than replacing the lawn entirely.

The cost picture over ten years

Artificial costs several times more to install because most of the money goes into the build underneath, not the grass itself. Against that, it removes mowing, feeding, scarifying and moss treatment. Real turf is cheap to lay and carries an ongoing cost in either your time or a maintenance visit. Over a decade the two are closer than the initial quotes suggest, and which comes out ahead depends heavily on whether the artificial lawn was built properly, because a poor one needs redoing in five or six years.

The part that actually decides it

Artificial grass fails for one reason above all others: it was laid over the existing ground rather than on a proper build-up. Done correctly it means excavating to depth, laying and compacting a Type 1 sub-base in layers, a laying course above that, a weed membrane and secure edging that the turf is fixed to. Skip the excavation and you get a lawn that holds water, grows weeds through the joints, ripples in hot weather and lifts at the edges.

That is the same principle as every other surface. Artificial turf installation and turfing both live or die on ground preparation, which is exactly why the quote follows a visit rather than a phone call. Drainage is the other half of it: on the heavy ground common through Renfrew, Linwood and Inchinnan, an artificial lawn without a route for water to escape becomes a paddling pool.
